The Northside jazz band played a private engagement in Hough on the Hill near Grantham for a lunchtime party. The customer chose an instrumental quartet to provide a mix of easy listening jazz such as ‘Fly me to the moon’ and 1920’s ‘Great Gatsby’ themed music and Dixieland Jazz.
The jazz band played for a wedding at Brackenhurst, near Southwell, part of Nottingham Trent university.
We haven’t had a chance to blog them this year!
The Jazz Trio had a great time recently playing for a function at Wellbeck Hall in West Bridgford. The event was a private birthday party.
Wellbeck Hall is a great venue for a party, with several function rooms and a spacious bar. We’re back there in Spring 2014 with Soul Destination party band.
The jazz trio included Al on the ol’ string bass, Rowan on Guitar and Lois leading the show on Clarinet and Saxophones. You can see a video clip from the show below.
The band provided background jazz during the guest’s arrival and during dinner. We were told that the birthday boy was a lover of 30s and 40s jazz, as well as swing classics so our repertoire included Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and so many more jazz trio interpretations of big band standards. We also played a couple of more recent tunes that have been accepted into the swing canon – such as Van Morrison’s Moondance.
Although we’ve played together in Jazz and Soul Destination bands for a couple of years now, this was actually our first outing with this line up as a jazz trio in Nottingham. We had a fantastic time on a glorious summer day and afterwards had a celebration coffee by the Trent river in West Bridgford.
Northside were recently asked for a Mansfield jazz duo to provide some instrumental entertainment for a public party at Ashmere Care Centre’s Sutton Lodge near Mansfield.
Comprising Sutton Court, Sutton Lodge and Sutton Manor, Ashmere provide care for the elderly in a purpose built location near Mansfield. The centre often puts on events aimed at residents, family and the local community. This event was a charity garden party in aid of Cancer Research UK. The event was split between a carnival themed event with clown and comic entertainment and a relaxed musical event featuring the jazz duo and an excellent male vocalist. You can find out more about Ashmere’s events here – there have a summer fayre coming up!
The Northside line up for the day featured the multi-talented Lois on Clarinet and Saxes accompanied by Rowan on Guitar. The Jazz duo played a range of tunes from across the jazz calendar, from the gypsy jazz inspired Sidney Bechet tune ‘Petite Fleur’ to Sinatra swing jazz from the 60s! To round off the second set we played a few acoustic pop hits from the likes of Bill Withers, Adele and Stevie Wonder.
Northside shared the bill with the excellent Richard Comfort. Richard sang a bit of everything – from Neil Diamond to Ronan Keating, also covering a few Rat Pack classics and keeping the swing jazz theme going!
Also happy to see Craig from Wedding Classics Mansfield with his beautiful Daimler Consort gleaming amongst a collection of other stunning classic cars!
Here’s what the customer had to say about the Jazz Duo
Thank you for making yesterday so easy re: set up etc. It was wonderful to have live instruments and I know that feedback has been very good. We would love to use you again in the future. (Claire, Finance Manager, Ashmere Care Homes Nottinghamshire)

The Lace Market Theatre Trust were looking for a Nottingham jazz trio with jazz singer for a private function and hired the Northside Trio to provide the evenings background music.
This is a lovely little independent theatre in the centre of Nottingham which recently celebrated its 40th year in their Nottingham Lace Market premises. The Theatre Trust held a Cabaret themed celebration and invited The Northside Trio to provide an evening of background entertainment.
As the Trust were looking for background music, the band recommended a jazz trio with jazz singer, guitarist and double bass. The band played two 45 minute sets and played 1930’s tunes appropriate to the Cabaret theme. In the interval, all were treated to the Trust’s own Cabaret comped by their very own ‘Emcee’!
The Jazz Trio are all keen supporters of independent theatre, Al and Rowan have regularly played in ‘the pit’ for theatre shows such as Oliver!, the Full Monty, Grease and Blood Brothers while Claire has been active as a ‘leading lady’ playing Velma Kelly in Chicago and Ado Annie in Oklahoma.
1920’s and 30’s theatre feeds massively into the repertoire of every jazz band and many of the tunes on the night such as A Fine Romance and I Get a Kick out of You were selections from the finest musicals of the last century. Its great to see an independent theatre thriving for 40+ years in the centre of Nottingham!
Here’s a video selection from the Jazz Trio’s second set:
And here’s what the customer said:
The Northside Trio were excellent, our guests all enjoyed their music, which fitted in perfectly with our Cabaret event. I’d definitely recommend them. (Michelle, Membership Secretary, Lace Market Theatre)
