Jazz Trio @ Private Function @ Welbeck Hall, West Bridgford, Nottingham 06/10/13

The Jazz Trio had a great time recently playing for a function at Wellbeck Hall in West Bridgford. The event was a private birthday party.

Wellbeck Hall is a great venue for a party, with several function rooms and a spacious bar. We’re back there in Spring 2014 with Soul Destination party band.

The jazz trio included Al on the ol’ string bass, Rowan on Guitar and Lois leading the show on Clarinet and Saxophones. You can see a video clip from the show below.

The band provided background jazz during the guest’s arrival and during dinner. We were told that the birthday boy was a lover of 30s and 40s jazz, as well as swing classics so our repertoire included Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and so many more jazz trio interpretations of big band standards. We also played a couple of more recent tunes that have been accepted into the swing canon – such as Van Morrison’s Moondance.

Although we’ve played together in Jazz and Soul Destination bands for a couple of years now, this was actually our first outing with this line up as a jazz trio in Nottingham. We had a fantastic time on a glorious summer day and afterwards had a celebration coffee by the Trent river in West Bridgford.

Jazz Trio @ The Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham – 15/06/13

Jazz Trio at the Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham

The Lace Market Theatre Trust were looking for a Nottingham jazz trio with jazz singer for a private function and hired the Northside Trio to provide the evenings background music.

Jazz Trio at the Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham

This is a lovely little independent theatre in the centre of Nottingham which recently celebrated its 40th year in their Nottingham Lace Market premises. The Theatre Trust held a Cabaret themed celebration and invited The Northside Trio to provide an evening of background entertainment.

As the Trust were looking for background music, the band recommended a jazz trio with jazz singer, guitarist and double bass. The band played two 45 minute sets and played 1930’s tunes appropriate to the Cabaret theme. In the interval, all were treated to the Trust’s own Cabaret comped by their very own ‘Emcee’!

The Jazz Trio are all keen supporters of independent theatre, Al and Rowan have regularly played in ‘the pit’ for theatre shows such as Oliver!, the Full Monty, Grease and Blood Brothers while Claire has been active as a ‘leading lady’ playing Velma Kelly in Chicago and Ado Annie in Oklahoma.

1920’s and 30’s theatre feeds massively into the repertoire of every jazz band and many of the tunes on the night such as A Fine Romance and I Get a Kick out of You were selections from the finest musicals of the last century. Its great to see an independent theatre thriving for 40+ years in the centre of Nottingham!

You can find out more about the theatre, including what’s on and how to get involved in the Trust.

And here’s what the customer said:

The Northside Trio were excellent, our guests all enjoyed their music, which fitted in perfectly with our Cabaret event. I’d definitely recommend them. (Michelle, Membership Secretary, Lace Market Theatre)
